Scouting is the third section of the Scouting family, and is open to anyone between the ages of 11-14 years old. It has come a long way since the first experimental camp on Brownsea Island in 1907, with just 20 boys, as today Scouting accounts for over 28 million members worldwide. Although Scouting has evolved and developed to meet the needs of today, the true principles of what we do and why are still the same. Scouting truly needs to be experienced first hand to be appreciated, and we're sure once you join you'll be hooked forever!
Scouting at Staplegrove has a long and proud heritage, spanning for over 80 years! Although the principles and values of Scouting have remained the same, our Troop now consists of many more young people, as well as leaders and parent helpers. The activities we run for the young people are designed to be fun and engaging, as well as physically and mentally challenging. Over half the programme is given over to take part in traditional scouting skills, the majority of which take place outdoors. These include camping, backwards cooking, firelighting, pioneering and survival. We also organise a wide selection of adventurous activities including zorbing, climbing, abseiling, grass sledging, caving, archery, shooting and hiking. Most of these activities will be a first time experience for many young people. Many of these activities will count towards completing a particular badge. Details of this can be found under the Badges and Awards page.
